The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday that Prithvi Shaw has been suspended from cricket following a doping violation. As per reports, the 19-year-old 'inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups'. The Mumbai batsman has been banned for a period of eight months, with BCCI backdating the start date to 16th March 2019. The ban will end at midnight on 15th November 2019.

In tests conducted from samples collected during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy held in February earlier this year, his sample has been found to contain Terbutaline, a specified substance which is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.

On 16 July 2019, when he was charged with the commission for an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), Shaw had responded by admitting to it but at the same time, asserting that the cause of it was the consumption of an over-the-counter cough syrup, which he had inadvertently taken to cure his ailment. The BCCI, however, is satisfied with his explanation.

The right-handed batsman has featured in two international Test matches for India, scoring a record-breaking maiden hundred. This ton resulted in him becoming the youngest Indian to score a debut Test century at 18 years and 319 days. He also represents the Delhi franchise in the Indian T20 League.

Akshay Dullarwar and Divya Gajraj are the other players who face the same fate as him.
